India’s indigenous education system had flourished during the pre-medieval times. There was a structured imparting of education to pupils from different socio-economic backgrounds. Great progress was made in the fields of philosophy, medicine, astronomy, economics, administration, pure as well as applied sciences, and arts and crafts. Scholars from distant lands came to India to have the best of education at universities like Nalanda, Takshshila and others. However, with the dawn of Muslim rule our institutions were systematically destroyed and replaced with Arabic ones. This wrought untold damage to our inherent genius and its flowering. Education suffered the most because, unlike our liberal, holistic and secular approach to academics, the Islamic education system was centered on theological dogmas which gave primacy to the Book. Therefore, contrary to scientific evidence, the earth remains flat even to this day – it would be heresy to assert otherwise in an Islamic dispensation.
But Muslim rulers and fundamentalists were not the only culprits. It is important to recall how the British Raj and its rather hasty exit from India affected the country’s education system. The manner in which generations of Indian youth thought and behaved was largely, if not wholly, influenced by what can only be termed as the British Imposed Education System.
While we shall be discussing the evolution of education system in India in detail we shall also attempt at coming up with suggestions to fashion a system that would enable the country to eradicate, as soon as possible, all evils that have penetrated our present system of education and also our social system through foreign domination and infiltrations.
