The Delhi Assembly elections are over! And AAP is all
over the small screen. But they may be aware that the mighty are generally bad
losers. We haven’t forgotten the manner in which the BJP ruled centre had been
making life difficult for the AAP members and its government. Brace up for
another round of raids, arrests and other familiar intimidating tactics. Not to
mention the stalling of various developmental projects in Delhi.
Coming back to the results, AAP’s successive landslide
victories have given hope to all those who are fed up of divisive politics. The
new low was Goli Maro and the CM is a terrorist slogan! Imagine, a state’s CM
being damned as a terrorist without any basis and getting away with it! The BJP
achieved this feat with breath-taking brazenness. Those who believe that the
Shaheen Bagh issue did not have any effect on the election results should take
a closer look at the tallies in various constituencies. The fact that someone
like Manish Sisodia almost lost to his BJP rival shows the devastating effect of
the hate driven politics. If the Jhadoo eventually swept away the Goli
challenge, the credit must go to the good sense of the majority of Delhi
voters. They voted for a party that had truly worked for the betterment of the
average citizen’s life.
After Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, BJP
has lost Assembly elections in Delhi now. Does this indicate a reversal in the
spread of Hindutva influence in the country? BJP may not be invincible but is
now the most powerful political entity in the country. The Congress has still
to sort out its ideological confusion. Should it be soft Hindutva or Liberal
Secularism of the Nehruvian origin? Can the Congress or UPA ruled states become
shining models of good governance and comprehensive economic development? Can
the AAP model be fruitfully adapted to non-BJP states? If the answers to these
questions are in the affirmative, the BJP will either sink with its Hindutva
ship or abandon it to swim with the liberal-secular-inclusive tide.
Let us wait and watch. Until then just enjoy the
aftertaste of Jhadoo’s victory over Goli and ponder over the Danda’s
ineffectiveness.
