These five poems are extracted from Randeep Wadehra’s,
“Singing Through the Nightmare” – which portrays variegated moods, situations
and scenarios pertaining to human life. These poems capture rainy season’s variegated
moods. The first, a Haiku, sets up the mood for the onset of monsoons. “Tropical
delights” captures the joy of children juxtaposed with the lusty sea during the
monsoons. “Déjà vu”, depicts a child’s frolic in the rain reminding the adults
of their own childhood days. “The First Shower” & “The Summer Rain” portray
some of the picturesque aspects of the rainy season.
Haiku 1
birds sing songs of joy
children's voices fill the air
as the clouds pile up
Tropical
delights
children pull at ripe mangoes
golden juice streaks down
naked brown bodies
scents of summer flowers
waltz around
sunrays slant off white teeth
giggles flow in chorus
with songs of birds
returning to their nests
sunset covers vision
with dusky silk
lightning prances
across chocolate horizons
charismatic clouds gather earth
in ardent embrace
sprinkle happy melodies
lusty sea-waves roar
rise and flatten like sated beasts
children toss sucked mango skins
into frothy waters
dance on wet sands
stars become brighter in the sky
Déjà
vu
across my window
gray skies unfold
sheets of water
brown streams
hop on to black roads
from green sidewalks
a half naked urchin joins
the crisscrossing rivulets
his dark skin glistens
black hair slither
down his head
wrap his face
in wet embrace
a red car
speeds through puddles
drenching the
child in its wake
his off-white
teeth sparkle
a long
forgotten whoop
escapes my
lips
The
first shower
under the trees
winds bend ragged weeds
just after rain
far in the woods
a kite lands on treetop
waiting for lunch
while i stand and watch
a frog escapes certain death
as if preordained
a swallow sings and flies
and sings and flies
outside my window
pigeons cast their shadows
on the wall
of the cool garden
hummingbirds hover
in the meadow
The
summer rain
a transparent cloud
brought to her
by summer winds
makes mother smile
scents of summer rain
frolic around
mark the season's change
robin stops singing
to look for food
here in the compound
ducks wade in the pond
a child swims in circles
clucks and giggles galore
